  • Low ping tweak - Internode/IINET/Bigpond

Most of you guys are doing this already but posting here in case someone doesn't know...

If you have Internode/IINET (on Agile exchange) or Bigpond ADSL2+ you have the option of enabling a low latency mode on your port and you might find it sheds 20 to 30ms off all your pings. This low latency mode on the exchange's DSLAM port is also known as turning off "interleaving" or enabling "fastpath".

    For Telstra Bigpond people:
    1. Login to your account at the bigpond website.
    2. Click on ADSL
    3. Click on Configuration
    4. Select configuration type Fast

This change takes a couple of hours to take effect and your modem will automatically drop then reconnect. Also note that the downside to this setting is that if you are very far from the exchange, you may experience more regular dropouts and you will definitely sync downstream slower. For Internode/IINET customers, the process is very similar although I don't have an internode account anymore to confirm what to click on. I believe it was called "connection profiles" or something like that.

As an example, I'm 700m from the exchange and sync at 19/1mbit. After changing to the fast profile my connection now syncs at 18/1 but my pings are a lot lower which is better for gaming. Another example however is when I had internode I was syncing at 15/2 and after turning on the fast profile it sync'd at 10/1. A more dramatic decrease in downstream speed but worth it in my eyes for the lower ping.

Hope this helps someone out there!

    For iinet the options are

Safe ADSL1 Speed up to 8,000 kbps If you have an older modem it may not support ADSL2/2+ speeds in excess of 8,000kbps. So play it safe.
Controlled ADSL2/2+ Speeds up to 24,000 kb ps (FAST) If you want to push the speed up a little but keep a stable connection. You may need this if you have poor line quality.
Standard ADSL2/2+ Speeds up to 24,000 kbps (FASTER) This is our default setting that suits most users. It's still really fast, but usually gives good connection stability.
Thrillseeker ADSL2/2+ Speeds up to 24,000 kbps (FASTEST) If you want to push the broadband speed limit. You'll definitely get the fastest speeds possible on your line. But you may hit the occasional speed bump or two.
Gamer ADSL2/2+ Speeds up to 24,000 kbps (UNINTERRUPTED) Well suited for time sensitive, interactive applications such as gaming, this selection is designed to provide the quickest connection response rather than a faster download speed.
Do you still recommend FAST over Gamer?

FYI I'm really far from the exchange, with super shit line quality. sync speed is 3,2 Mbit/s 704 kbit/s

I would not turn off interleaving if your current sync is 3.2mbits... Unless your happy with 512kbps internet

Unless you can change between low ping and high speed as often as you want really quickly, sounds pretty shit. Need "fast" internet to download stuff, not worth the 30 less ping.

I tried Gamer profile last night and it shaved ~14ms off my ping in quakelive, which is a big deal. But it took my sync speed down to 2.0mbit, fuck that shit. Only worth doing if you already have a high sync speed.

As mf said, different people have different internet speed requirements so in your case you weigh up weather it is worth it to you.

The good thing is that it's easily user-controlled, other ISPs require you to call up each time you want it changed.
if you know you are about to have a night of gaming, you can set the speed just for that afternoon only then set it back when you are finished gaming.

Also worth noting that my ping reduction to international servers seems to scale better with interleaving off.

i.e. with it on default settings my pings to US West coast are about 190ms to 210ms. With interleaving off they are now 150ms to 170ms, with East Coast pings about 210ms to 230ms.

I might have to give this a try. I live 180m Cabling distance from my exchange, 70m line of sight -.0. I can see the building from my backyard lol.

I'm just wondering if there is anyway to improve ping for gaming? When I play on steam on Australian severs I'm generally 120ms+ on COD for example.
Is it possible to change your line profile if you're connected via a RIM? Or does changing DNS settings help? (currently using default Telstra DNS

That's fast compared to mine lol. Nothing I seem to do improves my ping for gaming. So much lag.
